Major subdivisions of animal kingdom with evolutionary perspective
Kingdome Animalia is divided into two subkingdoms based on the organization of the cells and tissues.
Protozoa: They are unicellular animals. The only phylum present in this group is phylum Protozoa.
Metazoa: They are multicellular animals and have well defined tissues.
Phylum PoriferaThis phylum contain pore bearing animals e.g. sponges.
They do not have nerve or muscle cells.
They are aquatic animals.
They grow attached to rock.
Phylum Cnidaria (Coelentrata)
Fresh water hydras, jelly fish, and corals etc. belong to this phylum.
The animals of this group have tentacles with stinging cells.
They have only one opening to their digestive system called as both mouth and anus.
Phylum PlatyhelminthsThis phylum contains flatworms.
They have sensory organs.
They are found in ponds, lake, ocean etc.
They are parasitic flatworms which infect human beings.
They have highly developed digestive system.
They have long chain of segments called as proglottids.
Phylum NematodaThis phylum consists of roundworms.
They are found in soil and fresh water.
They have long and cylindrical bodies.
They have highly reproductive system.
Phylum AnnelidaThey contain segmented worms.
They live in water or damp soil.
They have cylindrical or elongated body which is divided into segments or rings.
They contain bristles which help in locomotion.
They have efficient circulatory and excretory system.
Phylum ArthropodaThis phylum consists of insects e.g. butterfly, spiders etc.
They have sensory organs on their heads called as appendages.
They have well defined circulatory and nervous system.
They have hard external shell and their body is segmented.
Phylum MolluscaThey contain terrestrial and aquatic animals e.g. snails, octopus etc.
Mollusks are covered in hard shell.
They pump water through gills.
Phylum EchinodermataThis phylum consist sea urchins and sea stars.
They are found in oceans.
They can regenerate their body part which is injured.
Phylum ChordataThis phylum contain amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals and fish.
Class AmphibiaThey have smooth and moist skin which helps in respiration.
They live on land and in water.
For example, Frogs.Class ReptiliaThey have dry-scaly skin.
They have limbs for their locomotion.
Examples are crocodile, snakes etc.
Class Fish
They are cold blooded animals with fins and gills.
Gills help in taking in oxygen.
They have well developed circulatory, nervous and digestive system.
Class MammaliaThey are warm blooded animals.
They are covered with hairs.
They contain sweat glands in their skin.
They have three middle ear bones.
Examples are, dogs, whales, elephants, man and horses.
Class Aves
They are warm blooded animals contains wings and feathers.
They also have sharp beaks.
They have keen eyesight.
Examples are, birds i.e. sparrow, eagles etc.
