THE REALITY BEHIND THE CYBER WORLD: MY thoughts on cyber sullying “Bullying builds character like nuclear waste creates superheroes. It’s a rare occurrence and often does much more damage than endowment”. (Van, 2011). Nowadays, our world is facing different problems, issues, and concerns that people hardly realize. Some of these issues are not properly addressed by our government for there are other issues that need to be taken first of.
One of these issues is cyber bullying.I know that all of us are fond of using Social Networking Sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, and other sites to connect with anyone around the world. And this is all because of our improving and high technology gadgets. Bullying that pops around cyber world goes much beyond. Cyber bullies are taking advantage of SNS to bully others not physically but emotionally.
Cyber bullying is very crucial. It makes the victim full of painful experiences in life. And sometimes, it leads to suicide.
Suicidal effect is the worst effect of cyber bullying. Technology is viral nowadays. It has advantages and disadvantages. It is up to people if they are going to use it in a right way or wrong way.
If you are going to use it in a wrong way, it can lead to cyber ullying which is a very bad idea. Even though we have freedom of speech, we should be careful on what we are posting in internet for many can see it. If you bully, think of the feelings that you may feel if you are in the victims’ shoes.
If you do not like to feel the way they feel, stop it. Sincerely say sorry for those who you hurt. Moreover, if you are the victim, do not commit suicide.Just have faith in God that you are going to overcome that problem. Show those who bully you that you got some power and you’re strong. Don’t be such an ugly and weakly duckling. Always emember that your family, friends, and loved ones are always there for you.
FIGHT FOR YOURSELF, DONT BE SCARED, AND KEEP YOUR HEAD UP! What cyber bullying all about? Bullying is already unlimited. It can be done not only in physical, emotional, and verbal ways, but also in cyber world. This new formed type of bullying is labeled as online harassment or what we known as cyber bullying. Some were saying that cyber bullying is only for minors and cyber stalking and cyber harassment is for adults. In cyber bullying, “the aggression occurs through modern technological devices specifically mobile phones and the internet”. SlonJe & Smith, 2008).
Cyber bullying is harassment thru internet. Making fake accounts, iniquitous posts such as embarrassing pictures and scandals, and sending mean messages thru SNS, email, and chat are all means of cyber bullying. Cyber bullying can be also sending a message to another that contains unwanted or unfriendly information about someone that can lead to a fght.It can also include defamation which is the act of defaming or harming others’ reputation. Ann Fris?©n (2010), Professor of Psychology at the University of Gothenburg, said “Cyber bullying occurs when new technologies erpetrators often use SMS, e-mail, chat rooms and Facebook to spread their message and this type of bullying can be more serious than conventional bullying. At least with conventional bullying the victim is left alone on evenings and weekends”. Sometimes, the bully in cyber bullying remains anonymous.
Bullying in cyberspace is much easier than bullying face-to-face or cyber bullying is much easier than the traditional bullying because in cyber space, one can bully another with him or her being unknown, therefore he or she will be less on being caught. But why do people bully online? According to Ghosh (2013), there are top four reasons of cyber bullying. The first one is “revenge”. People who bully because of revenge usually don’t see themselves as bullies. They may be protecting, avenging, or attempting to get back at someone because their friend or someone who is close to them was their victim’s enemy or made a mistake to their friend. This can also happen because the cyber bully victim is the bullys enemy. Next is “power”.
In this case, people who bully are trying to show how powerful they are. They want others to follow what they will say. They want their victims to be scared of them. They also did this because they see bullying as a way to stay popular and to show that they are the boss. They bully because in real world, they don’t have the power they have on-line. In short, they bully to gain some kind of power status. The third reason of cyber bullying is “entertainment”.
Some people find bullying entertaining. Those people think that embarrassing and hurting others is funny. Usually, these people make fun of others during parties so that there will be lots of people watching or there will be an audience. “According to the survey of The National Council on Crime Prevention, 81 % f the teenagers said that cyber bullying is fun”. (Harris, 2006). Lastly, the fourth reason of bullying is “stupidity’.
It sounds funny but it is true. A stupidity of a person can hurt others. Stupidity in this case means that you are unaware of your actions. The bullies in this case don’t know that their actions can hurt others already.Cyber Bullies respond or reply to emails and posts without thinking. They Just comment and post whatever they want to post even though it can hurt other’s feelings.
These are only some of the reasons why others love bullying. There are still many to count. Perry Aftab (2011) reported “bullies tend to have less involved parents, to be less excited about school, and to be depressed or anxious. They often have trouble controlling their emotions and impulses and find it hard to follow rules. ” Recent studies and statistics reported a rise of cyber bulling in the past years.
In the Philippines, an informal survey was conducted by Bullying and Cyber bullying Prevention Philippines headed by Sonnie Santos on the last quarter of 2012. The survey showed that “53 % of adult (18 years old and above) and 47 % minor (17 years old and below) said that they were bullied. In this age, 57 % were female and 43 % were male”. (Santos, 2013). The results also suggested that girls are more prone to cyber bully than boys and bullies don’t choose age. It also showed that the bullies used photo shopped images to hurt their victims’ feelings.
Some were also using private videos to ruin someone’s reputation. In order to stop this bullying in the Philippines, REPUBLIC ACT NO. 10627 or Anti- sullying Act of 2013 was made. It was approved last September 12, 2013.
Republic Act No. 10627 or Anti-Bullying Act of 3013 is an “act requiring all elementary and secondary schools to adopt policies to re no any criminal sanctions for those bullies. Instead, they will Just undergo disciplinary actions such as suspension or expulsion from the school.
The bully is also required to go to a rehabilitation center and attend the program imposed by the rehabilitation center. But when the bully commits mistakes under the Revised Penal Code, he or she may be subject to criminal charges. Cyber bullying is very crucial. It makes the victim full of painful experiences in life. And sometimes, it leads to suicide. Today, there are many cases of suicide because of cyber bullying. One of these cases is Phoebe Prince’s.
Phoebe Prince was a 15 year old girl that studied in South Hadley High School in Massachusetts, America. She committed suicide on January 14, 2010. She hanged herself up in the stairways of her familys apartment and was discovered by her 12 year old little sister. On her previous school in Ireland, she was one of those who bully another girl because of a love-triangle. Then after their victim transferred to another country, she apologized and wrote a letter to her which was praised by the victim’s mother. What she did in Ireland reach her present school in Massachusetts and that was when her classmates bullied her.
They were throwing some words to her such as she is a slut, a whore, and they told her to stay away from other people’s man. On January 14, 2010, a soda can was thrown at her by a passing car as she walked home from school. This is also the day when she killed herself”. Bennet, 2010). What do I think about cyber bullying? STOP BEING MEAN ON THE SCREEN!!! Bullying can happen in any place, any time, and in any ways. Even the cyber world or internet technology has also been afflicted with bullying especially in social networking sites (SNS) wherein gadgets like cellphones, tablets, and laptops are used o bully or say hateful words to someone. I think netizens do not have any rights to judge and bash someone through internet or what we called cyber bullying. I oppose cyber bullying.
It is not because I am a victim of it, actually, I have not experience that and I hope not to.It is because in the news I have watched and read there are many cases of cyber bullying wherein the victims committed suicide. An example of this is Megan Meier’s case which I have read in meganmeierfoundation.
org. It tells that “Megan was a 13 year-old teenage girl who committed suicide on October 16, 2006 in Missouri. She died a day later after hanging herself on her bedroom’s closet. She committed suicide after reading a message from Josh Evans, a nonexistent 16 year old boy created by her classmate’s mother Lori Drew, saying that he doesn’t want to be friends with her anymore because he heard that she is not nice to her friends.
Josh Evans also sent her cruel messages and in the electronic board on her school, there were some posters saying that “Megan Meier is a slut”, “Megan Meier is fat”. She can’t handle it and because of too much pain and depression, she committed suicide”. (Meier, 2007). Another eason for why I hate or oppose cyber bullying is because I found it very unfair and injustice when people assault others because of their race, culture, or their gender. Such case is the death of Tyler Clementi. “Clementi was from New Jersey who Jumped from the George Washington Bridge on September 21, 2010.
Tyler was a violinist from college. He was a gay violinist who was shy and self-contained student. He committed suicide after his dorm mates broadcasted or streamed his sexual encounter with another man online”.
(Pilkington, 2010). I also hate bullying because it can cause bad effects to the victims. It will be a big trauma for them. Victims of cyber bullying may tend to use alcohol and drugs because they feel that it somehow soothes them. Because of the shame they feel, they don’t want to attend school anymore so they will have low grades. They may also have lower self-esteem.And because of too much depression, they forgot to take care of themselves that led to health complications and the worst thing is committing suicide.
Cyber bullying wreck one’s life and I super hate it. God gave us life to live it, not to kill it. We gain our freedom from colonizers to live freely and do or say what we want but we must know our limitations so that we ill not harm others. Maybe cyber world must not be the one to be blamed because it is us who uses the internet. We, people, are the ones who post and comments bad things in the internet that can hurt others. We don’t have any right to bash someone through internet although we have the freedom of speech. Let us consider what others may feel towards our actions.
If you see something funny or hilarious in SNS, do not mind them so that cyber bullying will be lessen and if possible, it will be stop. It is better to mind your own business unless your friends, family, and your loved ones are involved with it. Still, let’s Just respect one another to maintain peace and not hurt anyone.
