Inaugural Big Apple Award for Diversity Data

New York, NY – January XX, 2018 – On the heels of calling on all PR agencies,
associations, and institutions to release
their diversity numbers, today the New York City Chapter of the
Public Relations Society of America (PRSA-NY) announced the inaugural Big Apple PR Award for Diversity Data. This
award will formally recognize the organization, agency, or corporate entity
that submits the most robust and inclusive diversity data. The winner will be
announced at the 31st Annual Big Apple Awards Gala in June 2018 at
the Oriental Mandarin Hotel in Manhattan.

 

Submissions are now open at XXXX. The winner will be
selected based on a set of criteria that includes comprehensiveness,
transparency, and how closely the data reflects the NY Metro Community. The 2020
U.S. Census is expected to show that New York City is comprised of nearly 75
percent people of color. Today, no corporation or agency comes close to
mirroring this community.

 

“Data has the power to drive change and create progress. Releasing
transparent diversity statistics is the first crucial step on the path toward a
more inclusive, innovative, and successful PR industry. With this award, we
want to recognize those who are prioritizing diversity and inclusion as both a
moral and business imperative and setting an example for the larger community,”
said Sharon Fenster, President of PRSA-NY. “This is a message to all public
relations leaders: we’re watching. And so are your employees, your clients, your
investors, and your customers. Let’s turn on the lights together.”

 

The new award reflects that today’s champions of diversity are
likely to become tomorrow’s industry leaders. Recent data shows that “companies
that embrace diversity and inclusion in all aspects of their business statistically
outperform their peers,” according to Bersin by Deloitte, a leading research
and advisory services firm. Diverse
companies report 2.3 times higher cash flow per employee and are nearly twice
as likely to be change-ready and innovation leaders.

 

The Big Apple Diversity Data
Award is part of PRSA-NY’s new results-driven diversity
and inclusion initiative, inspired by Richard Edelman’s call for PR and
communications professionals to be the conscience
of their clients and set the standard for ethics and transparency in
business. PRSA-NY’s diversity and inclusion advisory board convened for the
first time on January 16, 2018.  In
addition to its focus on diversity data, the board plans to establish a series
of certification workshops that promote multiculturalism and combat unconscious
bias: hidden prejudices that affect thinking, behaviors, and decision making in
the workplace.
