The optimum control of some mud system is based on pH, as
is the detection and treatment of contaminants.
From the above experiment we were able to determine not just the ph but
also the temperature and the mv, we were able to test for the alkalinity and
the acidity of the mud ,with the addition of a salt (nacl) we saw that there
was a change in the ph of the mixture ,we also concluded that the  electrometric method is more reliable than
the  colorimetric method ,at the end of
the experiment we were able to obtain the above results

·
I ensured that I rinsed the probe with
distilled water before putting into the mud to take the reading

·
I ensured that the litmus paper did not stick
into the mud

·
I ensured that the colour of the test paper
stabilized before I took my readings

PRECAUTIONS

From the results from the
experiment we can see that there was a major variation between the ph of the
litmus paper and that of the ph meter,we would most likely consider the result
of the ph meter because that of the litmus paper is unreliable, we also  observed that the ph became more acidic from
9 to 7 for the litmus paper and and increase in acidity from 8.5- 7.40,which
means that with the addition of salt it made the mixture more acidic

Then,
I took my readings for temperature, mv and ph

I
rinsed the probe with distilled water and immersed the probe into the solution

After
the color of the paper stabilized, I reported the value of the pH using the

EQUIPMENT AND APPARATUS

This is an instrument that determines the pH of
an aqueous solution by          measuring
the electro potential generated between a special glass electrode and a
reference electrode. The meter has a range of 0 to 14 pH unit.

2.
ELECTROMETRIC METHOD (PH METER) ;

Here the ph paper is infused
with dyes that exhibit different colours when exposed to solutions of varying
ph. High concentrations of salt in the sample may alter the colour developed by
the dyes and cause the estimate of ph to be unreliable

1.
COLORIMETER METHOD (PH PAPER):

The term ph is used to express the concentration of
hydrogen ions in aqueous solution. Ph is the logarithm of the reciprocal of the
hydrogen ion concentration in gram moles per litre The ph as a property of a
drilling fluid is a very important property of the drilling fluid as the
control and use of some mud systems is based on the ph as the detection and
treatment of some contaminants.  In a neutral
solution the hydrogen ion {H+} and the hydroxyl ion OH- concentration are
equal, ph of 7 means it is neutral, if it goes below 7 it means its increasing
in acidity while if it goes beyond 7 it is increasing in alkalinit .the ph can
be determined using ;
