Elements are the base that is used to make a piece of art. The elements and principles of art are things that can pulled by itself from a work of art.
An artist must use the elements and principles of art wisely, or their piece of art could be a catastrophe. The elements of art create the principles, so there might be the elements in the definition of the principles.Value is the depth and texture of objects. The depth and texture could be affected by light, so value deals with light. Value is the key illusion to light. Value deals with tint and shade.
Tint is when you make something lighter and shade is when you make something darker. Tint and shade make the illusion of light coming from an angle. Value can make many variations of a certain hue change. The Peasants´ Feast by Sebald Beham shows the use of value in a picture. The Peasants´ Feast is many drawings not just one.
Shapes create the illusion of space in a sculpture or painting. Space was used a lot in the Renaissance Period and also expressed with great interest. The angle you look at a sculpture will affect how much space you see. When you look at the different grounds it shows you the illusions of space.
The Baths of Caracalla picture taken by Louis Auguste shows the many illusions of space. The Baths of Caracalla are in Italy. Balance is the use of symmetry to make the object look like it is split into two halves. In sculptures balance in a lighter top and a heavier bottom. Lighter top can also mean a lighter shade of a color ,and heavier bottom means a darker shade on the bottom. Equal weight can mean all the same color or colors.
Balance is shown well by the Hathor Head given to the museum by Helen Miller Gould. It is a sculpture not a painting. Movement is the flowing motion of a piece of art that indicates the direction of movement. Arrows or lines can show the indication and direction of movement. Movement can have rhythm like dancing which will help show the movement of the people or objects.
The pieces of art that have movement have an order that shows the rhythm of the objects. Diagonal lines help show the movement or swish of clothes to indicate their direction of movement. Bowls with painted motifs found at the Eby Ranch site show the movement of lines and how diagonal lines show movement. Unity is a picture that comes together to flow and look like it was made to be a whole.
In unity there is usually one object that will be complemented by all of the other objects in the painting. Unity can also be all the objects being complemented by one object. Unity usually has balance which helps to make the picture or sculpture come together in a way that it looks like one. Symmetry can also help the picture form and come together by linking the objects in the middle. The Wanderer on the Mountaintop made by Caspar Friedrich shows unity with the one man sitting there. The man is looking at the mountains and it looks like the picture has a frame over his head. The principles of art help guide the artist to make the piece of art in his own unique way.
The elements of art help to set down a base for the piece of artwork ,or the elements help define the work of art more. Art can be descriptive, implied, or abstract. You can not make a piece of art without using one of the elements.
The Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci shows most of the elements and principles of art.
