Wireless technology is compatible with other parts of information systems. Due to their increased acceptance by most organizations, devices are now being developed to incorporate wireless functions and capabilities. These devices are designed to communicate with each other, regardless of the manufacturing company.

Almost every new gadget or device comes with wireless interfaces. PDAs, Blackberry and windows mobile phones all come equipped with functions that ensure that people can have access to their mails and any other relevant information wherever they are and no matter the time of day. Mobility is a major factor that has contributed to the deployment and compatibility of most wireless devices in the world today.Wireless Mobile communications began in Japan in December 1979 but by the end of July 1999, the number of subscribers was over 50 million.

The younger generation constitutes a generous number of the people attracted to wireless devices. The exponential rate at which people are drawn to the internet has created a market for manufacturers that revolves around introducing compatible devices and gadgets (Safecom, n.d.).

Wireless devices provide a convenient means of transferring data and exchanging information amongst different devices. Wireless Technology can be seen in devices like mobile phones, FM radios, wireless LANS, laptops, video conferencing, automated highway systems and numerous home appliances.Existing wireless technologies are available as one of Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), Code division multiple access (CDMA) and Time division multiple access (TDMA) which are used for networks such as 2G, 2.5G and 3G.

Steps are being made towards implementing 4G technologies. The 4G technologies and the Wideband-CDMA are going to be interoperable so that wireless services providers and wireless gadgets can be compatible with one another. Through the use of technologies such as software defined radios, future technology innovations of wireless devices will not only be compatible with existing ones but also with other forms of technology that are introduced into the market. A company known as LinkAir communications is currently developing what is known as the large-area-synchronized code-division multiple access (LAS-CDMA) which will be compatible with advanced fourth generation (4G) technologies (Safecom, n.

d.).Major Changes in IT systems that affect Wireless TechnologiesWireless technologies are being incorporated in services that involve both communication and data exchange. In the past, electronic communication could only take place over the phone from one definite location to the other. The advent of mobile communications and messaging has changed the face of most social interactions and business processes. Leading manufacturing companies in the world today are beginning to see the potential in designing and manufacturing devices that have wireless capabilities and interfaces for wireless transmission. This is the direction in which technology is headed and it has had a huge impact even on the development of IT systems.

The most recent and innovative application of wireless technology is in the development of emergency response systems which are extremely beneficial to saving the victims of fire, crime and natural disasters.  Global positioning systems make it extremely easy to identify specific locations through the use of wireless sensors and location maps.Wireless Technology Issues that are Currently UnresolvedThere are major issues involved in developing wireless systems and other technology systems. Every system has its vulnerabilities. With the right level of design, security and innovation, these problems can eventually serve as a means of accomplishing new exploits and changing the face of technology as we know it today.

A major problem associated with wireless technology is security. Wireless systems do not employ the use of physical media to transmit signals but rather, depend on air as the primary medium of transmission. These signals may be hijacked by malicious people and used to perform illegal acts such as key logging, spoofing, eavesdropping and gaining access to the resources of an organization. All these can lead to a compromise in the organization’s sensitive data and may cause an excessive loss of revenue. With the introduction of encryption and enhanced security protocols, these problems can be prevented and managed.Factors to be Considered in using Wireless TechnologyAny technology that can be achieved through the use of electromagnetic signals without the need for cables and wiring can be referred to as a wireless technology. In using wireless technologies, there are numerous factors apart from the technology behind it that need to be considered.

One of them is the environment. Walls and obstacles can have a negative impact on the range of wireless systems because signals cannot pass through metal, concrete, trees, pipes and electrical wiring, furniture and any obtrusive material. Even home appliances have a significant effect on wireless systems. Examples include the microwave oven, cordless telephones, electrical equipment and other wireless devices (Network ProPortal, n.d.).There are many legislative issues that may come up when deploying wireless systems so it’s important to apply for the approved wireless frequency through the appropriate authority and seek approval before any installation and deployment.
