Alfred Hitchcocks North by Northwest This moviewas pretty interesting. At first, I didnt lookforward to completing this assignment, but once Istarted watching, I was very interested. Thedialogue was clever, but the music was a littlebold. I would say it was cheesy but that probablyisnt the way to say it artistically. I noticedthere were strong beats and drums for climatic andintense parts such as the fight scenes.
Softermusic for the calm, dont-worry-everything-is-safescenes.I think sound played a major part in thescene were Robert Thornhill(Cary Grant) is out inthe field waiting for Mr. Caplin. Waiting for thesound of the cars to get louder, which means theyare close brings impatience. And then when theplane comes into the scene, the increasing soundis not desired because we know its after our hero. Its one of those scenes where you dont know whatthe hero should do since hes incredibly vulnerableall out in the open with virtually no where tohide. Also, that scene is important because itmakes the love interest, Ms. Eve Campbell(EvaMarie Saint), look like an Lighting and viewpointplayed big roles in determining the mood for thismovie as well.
I noticed that the lighting getsvery soft and misty when theres a romantic scene. It is often low in the mysterious scenes as well. The scene where Thornhill is spying on the badguys is an example.
The view point is from thelower corner. This gives the viewer a feeling ofmystery. Also, the actors face if often veryilluminated. This draws your attention to theirfacial expressions to help you understand theirfeelings. Another place where the camera leads theeye is at the train station.
Campbell is in thephone booth and the camera moves down to show thatone of the bad guys is in a booth also talking onthe phone. Then he gets up and leaves. She stepsout right afterwards. This confirms that she is incahoots with the bad guys. One more thing Inoticed was how having other things going on candraw the viewers attention.
For instance, at theauction, the viewer knows that the bad guy hasbidded and bought a piece of artwork but becausethere is an important confrontation going on, wedont think of its significance.Bibliography:.
