There is no right that is more fiercely guarded than of the Freedom of Speech.

The right to be heard and the right to speak freely is an important aspect of every government that is accorded such a primacy in the hierarchy of rights.  The reason for this is that every government is primarily established for the benefit of the people and when that government, for one reason or another, fails in its solemn obligation the citizens have the Freedom of Speech to try to rectify the situation.Over the years, many have died to protect this right.  Perhaps, just as important, as the number of people who have used this right to fight against injustice and oppression in all parts of the world.  The world, being as troubled as it is, has seen its share of heroes and martyrs who have invoked this right in order to bring about change in not only their lives but in the lives of others as well.  This is the greatest challenge that the United States, as the leading democracy in the world, has to face.

In order to arrive at a better understanding of the role of Americans in civil rights reform in the Middle East, it is important to understand the key features of a democratic system which is essential to any civil rights reform.  A democratic system is often mistakenly characterized as the rule of the majority.  While there is usually a large group of middle class individuals that comprise this democratic system, it does not necessarily mean that the majority rule.  This only means that the majority usually elects the representative to office but the hallmark of any democracy is still the protection of the rights of the minority.  The democratic system has a feature that is unlike other systems in that there is a system of checks and balances to ensure its stability.  An example of this would be the separation of powers in the United States government where the three (3) different bodies, the legislative, the judiciary, and the executive branch, are all considered as co-equals.

Perhaps the most important foundation of any democratic system is the protection of civil rights.  The civil rights such as the Bill of Rights or the First ten (10) amendments of the United States Constitution are prime examples of such civil liberties.  These are essential in the preservation of the democracy because they act as further checks and balances against the party who is in power.

It prevents the democratic government from being used to oppress the rights of the people. As such, the involvement of the United States in the Middle East could lead to the creation of a model democracy in the Arab world and that such creation could possibly lead to other governments in the Middle East to follow suit.  The reason for this is based on the lack of understanding that the governments in the Middle East have of the United States and of U.S. policies.  By continuing the campaign in the Middle East, the United States has a chance of installing a democratic form of government that could greatly affect the general sentiments of the countries in the Middle East regarding America.

One of the important aspects of being to institute civil rights reform in the Middle East, however, lies in the manner by which the United States handles its policies in Iraq.  These events have captured the attention of the international community and as such, a number of countries have begun taking action by imposing economic sanctions in Iraq.  As the world reels from the blow that this has dealt to democracies all over the world, many are beginning to look to the United States for guidance on this matter.

As one of the main bastions of democracy, the United States will surely be influential on this matter depending on the actions that it will take. The key, therefore, is for the United States to maintain its commitment to providing support for those that have been affected by all this.  The sanctions and public announcements by the United States government remain as the few influential actions that could reverse or put an end to this situation.  While the United States is not the only country that can end this situation, it certainly is one of the more important players in all of this.
