“In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever.” These are the words etched in the wall behind the statue of the Great President Abraham Lincoln. It reminds the American people that slavery doesn’t have a place in a civilized society of free men.The place where I visited was the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.
This memorial was built as a tribute to the 16th President of the United States of America. Walking along the grounds of the memorial is an extraordinary experience, especially if you come face to face with the sitting statue of the man himself. The marble statue is a very arresting sight; if you keep on staring at it, you could sense the power evoked by that statue, and it engulfs you with a feeling of pride and nationalism.
It doesn’t take long to trudge the grounds of the Memorial and to see the marble statue, but when you leave the place, you gain insight as to the history of the United States during the time when slavery was rampant, and the time when the slaves were freed due to the Emancipation Proclamation enacted by the President, Abraham Lincoln. The Memorial was a witness during the political rallies of the 1960s, especially on August 28, 1963 when Dr. Martin Luther King deliver his “I have a Dream” speech. It is very fulfilling to know that the American people have learned to end slavery with the help of the Great Emancipator. It is just apt to say that America is a land of great people and free men.
This Memorial is a fitting tribute to the man who started it all.
