Medical Sonography is an imaging technique that is growing quickly in use where the medical field is concerned. Sonography uses very high frequency sound waves in producing images of the internal body.Diagnostic sonography scanners function in the frequency range of 2 to 15 megahertz and sonography medical officials view these high quality images, which are taught to emerging monographers in a clinical setting where hands-on learning is necessary in gaining knowledge and experience, especially when students utilize the lab to learn important sonography procedures. In learning sonography, all future sonographers must learn about patient care, sonographic physics, abdominal sonography, obstetrical/gynecological sonography and vascular sonography. There is much information to be learned and all students must pay special attention to the demonstrations, while being taught. When the student becomes familiar with sonography, they will be capable of producing high quality images, so a physician can make good decisions for the patient, in question.

These images will provide the medical officials with a means to examine the patient, before having to decide whether they need surgery or some other evasive procedure in their treatment plan. With sonography, physicians can make critical decisions in determining the best possible treatment for the patient after they view high quality images of the patients muscles and internal organs, including their size, possible tears and the makeup and deformities in the body that they are looking at.Obstetric sonography is very often used for pregnant women, where the sonographer is able to bring up images of the growing baby and determine if the size of the fetus is adequately progressing at a normal rate. They can also see many abnormalities in the growing fetus, multiple babies and determine the date of the delivery for the parents.Arthur C. Fleischer tells us that, (Fleischer, 2003) “The proper and optimal use diagnostic sonography requires a full working knowledge of the principles used to acquire and interpret sonographic images.

”Medical specialists value sonography because they can see live images in their patients internal body. Because this information that the sonogram provides is so efficient in the medical field, it is commonly used.Sonography equipment is relatively inexpensive, especially when you compare this process to other medical procedures, while they are relatively small and can be moved around without much trouble. To learn how to become a sonographer, there are many educational institutions that offers courses for those who are interested and details can be obtained by contacting the program director in your local area who will lead you through the process of becoming a sonographer.(Sherry, 2006) Clifford J. Sherry, author of the book, “Opportunities in Medical Careers”, tell us all about the Sonography field and how we can gain have many opportunities in this line of work.

We learn from Ellen Bowman, a program director for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, that, “The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is a skilled person qualified by academic and clinical preparation to perform ultrasound exams under the supervision of a qualified physician. The Sonographer may provide this service in a variety of medical settings. The graduate in Diagnostic Medical Sonography will be prepared to perform ultrasound examinations, provide patient care and record the anatomic, pathologic, and/or physiologic data for interpretation by the physician.”She also tells us that, “Students must begin this one-year certificate program in the fall semester.

The program of study includes thirty-six (36) credit hours of didactic, college laboratory, and clinical sessions. All courses must be taken sequentially and all students matriculate on a full-time basis. Areas of concentration include ultrasound physics, abdominal, and OB/GYN sonography.

Sonography related to small body structures and special procedures is also included. Extensive clinical experience is provided at Western New York health care facilities.”Sonography can prove to be a great career choice for students who aren’t quite sure what field that would like to specialize in. Many individuals have found this line of work to be extremely rewarding.Diagnostic medical sonographers can specialize through formal or a continuing education, after certification and graduation.

New advancements in modern technology have led to higher specialization in sonography. Specialties in this field, include spectral and color Doppler, vascular sonography, endocavity imaging, and intra-operative ultrasound.
