There is a huge stereotyping of people due to their ethnic backgrounds. African Americans are a race that are often stereotyped with many common concepts, concerning their lifestyle. One of the common assumptions about African Americans is they are very likely to practice sexual promiscuity.
It is a common stereotype that black males will sleep with many women during their lifetime. Other forms of stereotyping of this large ethnic group is that they will receive poor service from businesses, have a much greater chance of going to prison because of their color and that they sell and use drugs more often than most other ethnic groups. Many times on television, when drugs are being used, one normally expects to see more black people than any other ethnic group, among the dealers and users. Other common ideas is that African Americans often steal, have many children and reside in less desirable communities. The key to reversing stereotypes is to contradict them, in direct interactions between people, in the media, and through education. In the book “Enter The New Negro,” the author explains that “Stereotyping Negros is very common in the United States.” (Nadell, 2004) She offers a good look into Black history and explains why some stereotypes have been passed down through the generations.
