The focus of the study

The focus of the study is the significance of the philosophical and physical training of Karate in developing emotional intelligence (EI) and competencies for leadership roles. Thus, students of Karate can attribute directly their training to directly enhance their emotional intelligence quotient (EQ) and their leadership effectiveness. For the purpose of this study, emotional intelligence will be defined by the Goleman model, the emotional-social intelligence (ESI) model and the trait EI model. Considering the settings by which EI can be best exhibited, leadership competency will be measure using Fiedler contingency model which focuses on leadership performance in situational contingencies (Petrides et al, 2001; Bliss, 2007).

Key questions to be answered by the study are as follows:Is there a conclusive positive relationship between Karate training, EQ and effective leadership?What philosophical maxims and physical training in Karate promotes EI?How does these philosophical maxims and physical training in Karate enhance leadership competencies?To limit the study, the population will focus on students of Karate under the Shotokan School. It considered as one of the primary schools in the United States and United Kingdom and because of the availability of literature written by its founder Gichin Funakoshi (Funakoshi, 1973; 2001).         One of the major issues that the study will have to deal with is regarding the debate on the validity of the theoretical foundations of EI.

One criticism that can directly affect the study is the claim that EI has no substantial predictive value and the issues regarding the lack of valid measurement methodologies (Payne, 1986). For the completion of this study, two weeks will be devoted to research and preparation for interviews or surveys, one week will be allotted for the surveys or interviews and another week will be used for the finalization of the paper.ReferencesBliss, Samuel E.
