Beauty 1 Inner Beauty vs. Outer Beauty Beauty 2 Inner Beauty vs. Outer Beauty What is beauty? Beauty is defined as the qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to ones senses. But to us, beauty is a personal phenomenon. While we instinctively know what appeals to our sense of beauty, defining what determines attractiveness is not always easy. After all, whether someone is beautiful is a matter of opinion right? So, is it the inner or outer beauty that determines ones beauty? We know beauty it is greatly appreciated and very important for a lot of people.
Many would argue that how we look and how other people react to our physical appearance is what really matters. Outer beauty is thought to be something that we are born with. Those attractive features that make people notice us in a crowd. Our face, our figure, outer beauty is basically about flesh and bone. Everyday, we are exposed to commercialized images of what the male and female body should look like. Posters of hair products with a woman posing with perfect hair, or body in television shows where the actors or actresses look like a Ken or Barbie doll.
Let’s just say the hair model is very cold hearted and mean, always bosses people around and gives no respect to her co-workers, Is she still a beautiful person? Does the way someone acts and treats others change the beautiful features on the outside to be not so attractive? They say, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, but who would find ugliness on the inside to be beautiful? Beauty 3 Inner beauty is believed to be the beauty within the soul. The way one treats others and how they handle themselves. The ability to show love and compassion towards others.
Having hope for positive outcomes related to events and circumstances in the lives of others. These feelings and emotions come from a place of inner beauty, do you feel compassion and sympathy towards someone when you see them in pain or suffering? Compassion comes from inner beauty, at times you can feel it tug at your heart, sometimes you can ignore it but deep down it’s always there. I believe the way people are interpreting beauty can have a lot of negative affects and influences on people. Getting picked on for being overweight or being physically unattractive can lead people in dangerous and sometimes fatal decisions.
For example, someone who is overweight may pick up anorexia to lose weight faster to be socially acceptable. Perhaps the girl who thought she was not pretty enough gets plastic surgery to fit into what she believes society would approve of. Society dictates what outer beauty is, based on commercial products and unrealistic advertisements. Inner beauty cannot be photographed and is very individual and not marketable. Outer beauty will fade with age and camera filters, but inner beauty with love compassion and soul lasts forever.
