Every day, more and more people are getting attached to Social Networking sites as it is now moving in as one of the primary means of communication of people. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and MySpace were only a few of the tons of sites out there that caters the need of people. Through this Social Media, people can combine work and relaxation. However, Social media also comes with positive and negative effects to Adolescents. ( Snider, 2012 )

In the article published by Psychology Today, Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplishes. This can lead to feelings of guilt, depression and self doubt. While Addiction, it is a condition or a habit where a person can’t control their behavior from stopping or avoiding it. It is described as an impulse control disorder wherein it does not involve with the use of intoxicating drug and it is similar to pathological gambling. Online users can develop emotional attachment to the connection that they are having in Social media, (Kelly, 2017)

According to Griffiths (2018), Social media becomes the foundation of modern communication and connection with people and it allows the users to generate a sense of belonging or familiarity and redefine the way of their personage. On the other hand, he claims that in mental health perspective it has a negative impact who are addictive with excessive use of Internet and Social media. Especially for those users who are adolescence, it associate with a number of psychological problems such as Anxiety, Depression, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Addiction. Because social networking sites can be easily access by the use of smartphones, most of the minorities are commonly labelled as the “Fear of missing out”.

Extensive use of Social Media heightened Internet Addiction, cyber-bullying, sex chatting, sleep deprivation and avoidance of face-to-face interaction. In addition to that, several physicians claimed that social media addiction is a bona fide medical condition. (Veronica, S. ; Samuel, U. 2013)

The goal of Procrastination is to escape the necessity of demand and obligation. Procrastination demands Delay and Denial. Delay is the part where ‘putting off until later’ and Denial part is where ‘putting out of mind’ – being able to assume that the word later will never come. (Pickhardt, 2008)

According to Sreenivasan and Weinberger (2018), there are 3 types of procrastinators, Conscientious People, Irresponsible People and Self-Centered People. Conscientious people are those individuals who rarely defer what they should do; Irresponsible people are those individuals who aren’t that worried of what they should do; while the Self – Centered People are those individuals who wants to do whatever they like to do.

Based on Signaling Theory of Donath (2007), one’s self-presentation on Social Networking Sites develops identity and trust with others. It also states that, social networking sites is influential to the development of social identity. It explains the how firm social media interactions particularly the thoughts and practices that regards with issues such as health illness and guidance to transform individuals. Social Integration is a process wherein the behavior of an individual has been accepted and filtered.

In line with this research it examined (a) To assess the possible reasons why social media/internet is a factor of addiction and procrastination of adolescence (b) And to assess the relationship between addiction and procrastination on social media of adolescence.

Therefore, the respondents are expected to be honest and cooperative while answering the prepared questionnaire, for the results to be precise.


In this study, Fifty (50) Adolescents ranging from 13-19 years old both Male and Female, who are using Social Media, were taken as the respondents through Convenience Sampling.

The instruments used in this study, were Internet Addiction Test and Procrastination Questionnaire.

The Internet Addiction Test (IAT) was used to measure the addictive use of Internet.

Average On-Line User
50 – 79 points
Experiencing Occasional or Frequent Problems
80 – 100 points
Internet Usage is Causing significant problems

The Procrastination Questionnaire was used to assess whether the person is likely to be a procrastinator.
