Obsessive-compulsive
disorders.
Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCD) are
a group of overlapping disorders that generally involve intrusive, unpleasant
thoughts and repetitive behaviors. (Pelz 2017).
As our text explained many of us experience unwanted thoughts from time
to time and sometimes engage in repetitive behaviors. However, for those
suffering from OCD, these thoughts and behaviors are so extreme that it disrupts
life.
In the U.S. there is a focus on mental health, especially
with the opioid epidemic and there are many programs that help Americans with
mental illness. Yet, in a recent report it was found that 57% of those
suffering are still not receiving the help they need. The cause of this discrepancy may be stigma,
cultural or socioeconomic issues. For
people living with psychological disorder such as OCD these rituals can be
upsetting not only to themselves but also to their loved ones.
Obsession-compulsion disorder interferes with family lives and social
activities. Having fixated thoughts
interrupting lifestyle on a daily basis which includes strong impulses to
perform certain acts and rituals such as repeatedly washing hands, may make the
individual feel they are losing control. OCD sufferers may also become isolated from
their friends and families afraid to let these behaviors become exposed.
People experiencing OCD symptoms may become
depressed, angry and could experience feeling of powerlessness or a state of being
out of control. The long-term effects of this disease can be devastating. Serious diseases such as heart problems or ulcers
can precipitated from the efforts of performing acts or rituals over and over
again, day in and day out. Exhaustion is
also a serious side effect and abnormal weight or hair loss may also be seen. To
tamper some of these effects, experts’ advice that it is important to seek
professional help. OCD suffers should
also educate themselves about their condition which can be an effective way in
learning to control the rituals. Psychologists’
professionals also advise that those suffering from OCD learn to abate their
symptoms by seeking ways to avoid or minimize stressful situations. It is also advised that they get enough sleep
and consume a healthy diet.
Post-Traumatic
Stress Disorder
Another disorder we read about in our text is
post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) This results from particularly traumatic
or disturbing events experienced, such as soldiers fighting in combative
situations or people who had lived through
natural disasters or terrorist attacks. Individuals who witnessed these
types of events are at an increased risk in developing this disorder. For those
who are still having symptoms months later pertaining to what they have seen
can be diagnosed with PTSD.
The
symptoms experienced with PTSD may include flashbacks, difficulty sleeping and nightmares
and severe anxiety, outbursts of anger and irritability as well as
uncontrollable thoughts about the event.
(www.mayoclinic.org). these symptoms can affect people tremendously if goes
untreated. It may affect their family, jobs or their social lives. In a recent study done by the Nebraska
Department of Veteran Affairs reported that an estimated 7.8 percent of
Americans will experience PTSD at some point in their lives, with women (10.4%)
twice as likely as men (5%) to develop PTSD. About 3.6 percent of U.S. adults
aged 18 to 54 (5.2 million people) have PTSD during the course of a given year.
This represents a small portion of those who have experienced at least one
traumatic event; 60.7% of men and 51.2% of women reported at least one
traumatic event. (http://www.ptsd.ne.gov/what-is-ptsd.html).
PTSD is also
problematic by the fact that people with this disorder often may also suffer
from ailments such as depression,
substance abuse, problems of memory and cognition, and other problems of
physical and mental health. Like other mental disorders, it is also can
interfere with the person’s ability to
function in social or family life, including occupational instability, marital
problems and divorces, family discord, and difficulties in parenting. http://www.ptsd.ne.gov/what-is-ptsd.html
The idea of social psychology
The understanding of social psychology
is based on relationships with groups of people in society. I learned that this
social psychology is based on a scientific study of people’s thoughts, feelings
and behaviors. These are influence by the actual presence of others and their
environments. Social psychology
provides some key aspects of social behavior that relates to our actions and how
we perceived ourselves in society. I will share some examples that I learned in
this module as followed. Social behavior is goal oriented, that means if you
want to attract another person both party must share common goals such as,
getting married the husband and wife must acknowledge their legal vow.
Also, individual’s
characteristic is proven to be the reason why people react differently to
various situations. For example, my biological brother would act so kind and
caring when he is close family and friends. But when among his friends as a
group they all acted as delinquents. They became known by their unmannerly
actions. They showed no moral respect for the people in their neighborhood. One
Sunday evening my brother and his friends was helping a group elderly
people with their shopping bags during the busy summer months, after seeing
this I was justify by their actions that they all have kind-hearted
personalities innate deep within.
This topic impacted my future thinking
because I learned that social psychology enriches our understanding and the
world around us. In conclusion there is a greater appreciation for social
relationships in this modern era.
