Our group chose OCD, as it is one

Our group chose OCD, as it is one of the more common disorders among people(Over two percent of the total population). Thus, it’s a lot easier to encounter those suffering from the disorder. Especially since most that are ailed by it don’t even realize that they are affected. It can be useful then, to have general knowledge of the disorder when talking and interacting with people that have OCD. The disorder was officially discovered in the 19th century, but the first sign of OCD was observed as far back as the 17th century. The obsessions and behaviors were remarked as being “symptoms of religious melancholy”. Such an example would be being terrified to speaking within a church or chapel. These people would be scared of potentially saying something blasphemous, acting as a callsign of the compulsive thoughts created by the disorder.  Throughout the ages, psychiatrists and other doctors have argued about the root cause of OCD. Some believed it to be a form of partial insanity, while others thought it to be some problem with the patient’s “will”. There are even more old theories, such as OCD being an emotional disease.  Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a disorder that affects the brain. It is known for recursive thoughts and behaviors, which are triggered by some particular subject the person is obsessed with. Common examples are being obsessed with cleanliness and fearing contamination from germs, or perhaps obsession with order and symmetry throughout everything they do. The Basal Ganglia is the main part of the brain associated with OCD. The Basal Ganglia controls voluntary muscle movements and controls habits formed by the brain. The most popular theories state that the basal ganglia assesses a situation, and employs certain behaviors based on the situation. In OCD, the brain is constantly generating thoughts about the patient’s obsession. Compulsions are created when these thoughts are acted upon, eventually forming habits the person performs everyday. Eventually these thoughts create anxiety, and begin to interfere with general life for the person.
