Rough draft for patient education plan Diagnosis: Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) What is it? A (UTI) Urinary Tract Infection happens when bacteria enters and multiplies in the sterile urinary tract which causes inflammation and can result in small amounts of blood, pus, and bacteria in the urine. This can cause pain with urination, a sense of needing to urinate frequently, and sometimes cramping in the lower abdomen. The infection can involve the urethra, the bladder, sometimes the ureters, and occasionally the kidneys. If kidneys are involved you may have fever and chills.

What causes it?Most of these infections are causes by bacteria that are normally present in the intestine. Because women have a short urethra which opens near the vagina, bacteria can enter the bladder easily. What is the treatment? Urinary tract infections are treated with antibiotics Drinking plenty of liquids helps wash the urinary tract out Avoid caffeine, because it irritates the bladder Rest helps conserve energy for healing the infection Cranberry juice, plums, or apricot juice can help by creating a more acidic environment in which bacteria can’t grow easily Hot baths can alleviate discomfortPrevention Always urinate when you feel the need. Overfilling the bladder can cause irritation which can lead to infection Drink plenty of liquids to keep the urinary tract flushed Caffeine and alcohol are irritating to the bladder and should be avoided Urinate before and after sexual intercourse to flush bacteria away Wash your hands before and after you urinate to avoid spreading bacteria Wipe from front to back after urination or bowel movement Keeping the vaginal area dry will make it harder for bacteria to grow Wearing cotton underwear can help keep the area dry
