Jun 30th 2013 Slavery: The New Era Today, technology is a necessary part of daily life; nobody can figure out the world without these products that make our life so easy and comfortable.
However, have you ever thought about how far technology is impacting our lives? Modern society is too dependent on computers and other technological devices because we are becoming the technologys slave; we always want the newest gadget, particularly in American Culture where “new’ is better than “old”.We are spending too much time n computers to interact with other people instead of spend time in recreational activities or having a conversation with someone face to face. First, this is a new slavery era, and we are becoming obsessed with buying the newer, better version than previous models. People are always fghting to be the first one to order the latest generation of computers, smartphones, and tablets. Cellphone companies, such as Apple, Blackberry, Motorola, Samsung, Nokia, and HTC are competing to create the best smartphone; there is a new version almost every year that is faster nd slimmer than the year before.Microsoft and Apple are principal computers companies that have been competing for years to create better computer systems. For instance, there are nearly 1 5 Microsoft windows versions (from 1985 to the present) that are continually being improved upon. Second, although computers are a useful tool for work and school, we are using them in a personal way to interact with other people, so there is less face to face conversation.
For those who prefer to hide behind computers.Online, we can find an answer for any question. For instance when we are doing homework and we not understood something, we immediately go to Google. In fact, Google has become the answer for everything we do not know, but this is not always a reliably source of information, since anyone can upload anything they want to the internet.
According to writer Matt Richtel of The New York Times, “In place where technology is seen as an all-powerful answer, it is increasingly being seen as too powerful, even addictive”.Facebook and Twitter are the most common ocial network where we share our pictures and what are we doing, nevertheless we have to be careful of how much time are we spending at computer as Stuart Crabb, a Director in the executive offices of Facebook explains, “People need to notice the effect that time online has on your performance and relationships” (qtd in Richtel 1). Finally, GPS makes us lazy because we do not need to remember street’s names; we just follow instruction from a digital voice in order to get the place we want.
In the article “Some Say Technology Has Made Americans Lazy, Forgetful” David Gill, a ormer ethics professor at New College Berkeley and North Park University writes, “Our dependence on technology to memorize, entertain and communicate for us is, in fact, enslaving, not liberating” . When the cell phone was invented it was a tool to communicate to other people, making call and sending messages. Nowadays, such as, save directions and numbers, look for restaurant and even turn off your house’s lights when you are not at home.Your smartphone has your schedule, your contact’s phone numbers, and practically all of your personal information, which is he reason for why people are completely dependent on technology. Jorge Ramos, the principal Journalist in the Hispanic community on “The End of the Secrets” explain, how important is his cell phone for him and share an anecdote about how he felt when his smartphone fall in a river and says “my first impulse was Jump into the water to rescue my phone but, when I realized it would be foolish, suddenly, I felt like something in me had died. That cell phone had my whole life: my pictures, phone numbers and passwords. It was almost a part of my body, I had have my smartphone attached to me more than nobody, I literally slept with my cell phone” (Ramos 16). Some people argue that computer and technology gadgets are essential for todays life style.
They claim that computers help us to perform better and produce more, they also say that computers offers a variety of resources from social networking, marketing websites, databases, to educational websites and so much more, and it is definitely true. However, it is also true that internet is a double-edged sword because here are a lot of perils, including identity theft, computer viruses, and as a haven for stalkers. It is true that technology helps to make our life easy, but we are over using technology, since, some people consider computers an extension of the human body, and they cannot conceive of life without these gadgets. Then, we should be aware about how much screen time we are spending and use technology only when it is really necessary at school or at work, not use it in personal purpose.
People should replace a video game for s soccer or basketball with your friends outside at the park r replace a like in Facebook for a cup of coffee with the people you love. We should learn to use technology in a responsible way. Works Cited Ramos, Jorge. “The End of the Secrets. ” Hoy Newspaper.
