The film (WIT) was directed by Mike Nichols in 2001. It explores the ideas what is truly important. This movie describes the importance of therapeutic communication between the health care professionals and the patients. The quality of a therapeutic relationship depends on the ability of the healthcare provider to communicate effectively. So, it plays a vital role in developing the good relationship between the health care professionals and the patients. The main character of this movies is the patient Vivian who is in final weeks of life as she undergoes eight months of painful, experimental treatment for stage IV Metastatic Ovarian Cancer. According to Dziopa & Ahern (2009), “Mental health nursing practice id identified as the understanding and empathy, being there and being available, being genuine and demonstrating self-awareness as vital components in the development of a patient-Centred and therapeutic relationships. Therapeutic communication refers to the face-to-face process of interacting that focuses on advancing the physical and emotional well-being of a patient which is necessary to accomplish the nursing goals in communicating with the patient. In the movie, Professor Vivian Bearing is diagnosed with stage IV Ovarian cancer by Dr. Harvey Kelekian. In less than a minute, Dr Kelekian starts explaining an experience research protocol without any empathy for the clinical study. So, she bears this therapy and demeaning study by Dr. Kelekian and his team which includes her former student Jason Posner. While examining, Dr.Jason Posner leaves susan in uncomfortable position while going out to look for a primary nurse Susan. His behaviour during the examination was not acceptable which shows no respect towards patient and their emotions. Firstly, he did not have female present with him. Secondly, when exiting the room Dr. Jason forgets to close the door which ends in exposing vivian’s nakedness. Vivian was frequently asked ‘HOW ARE YOU FEELING’ when she came out after long operation with tubes all over her body. After the examination, he speaks to himself using medical terms which Vivian cant understand. She was frequently asked about her identity. Vivian says she felt herself as a specimen after seeing the unprofessional behaviour and being operated far below the standard. These are the examples of Ineffective communication which shows no effective communication between the research team.
In all, Nurse Susan Manmohan was only the person who showed true emotion towards Vivian. She developed a good relationship with Vivian and set the standard in advocacy. It is important for a nurse to make solid statement, even the true thoughts may be rejected. It persued me to be more assertive everyday. During vivians stay in hospital, the nurse Susie cared enough to go beyond and above in her line of work. She showed the true spirit of Nursing. She comfort her and gave her presence in time of loneliness both verbally and non-verbally. She explains Vivian about her condition and helped Vivian become less nervous during the time of her treatment. Throughout the movie it is the best part which showed spectacular connection between the patent Vivian and Nurse Susan which shows the best example of effective communication. (S.A Larson, 2015). Effective communication represents the very essence of the human definition (Hargie 2011, p.2).
Among all, Nurse Susan Monahan was only the person who showed the emotion towards Vivian. She developed a good relationship with her and setting the standard of advocacy. It is important as a Nurse to make a solid statement. It pursued me to be more confident every day. During Vivian’s stay in hospital, the nurse Susie cared enough to go above and beyond while she is in work. She showed the true spirit of Nursing. She comforts her and gave her presence in the time of loneliness both verbally and non-verbally. She explains Vivian about her condition and helped Vivian become less nervous during the time of her treatment. Dr.Kelekian decides to give morphine to Vivian when she was in lots of pain, but Susie(Nurse) request Dr. Kelekian not to give morphine rather give something which can reduce her pain. Dr.Kelekian doesn’t listen to nurse Susie and and gives high dose of analgesics (WIT 2011). Vivian cries because she is in excess dose of analgescis. Cancer pain is caused by tumour progression and its related to pathological process, invasive procedures, toxicities of treatment, infection and physical limitations (Potter ; Perry, 2014). Every professional health care provider need to develop a style of relating to patients that is ‘right’. A professional nurse must clarify the problems to the patients in any situation. Nurse must realize that their professional self emerges from their personal self (Hood 2010). In the movie, Susie is only character, who acted as professional. She mentioned Vivian about the cancer being spread on her body, the progress of her treatment and the end of life care the patient would want. Difference between DNI/DNR was explained to her (WIT,2011). All-embracing, the film is about the care and safety provided to the patient.
