The author of one of my favorite
books – How to win friends and influence people Dale Carnegie said, “Think happy thoughts, and you will be
happy, think successful thoughts, and you will succeed.” Likewise,
if we think miserable thoughts we will be miserable, angry, fearful. If we
think of failure we will fail. It sounds a little too easy or simple doesn’t it.
No. Life isn’t that simple. However, I do believe what we think will play out
in our lives. We need to assume a positive attitude instead of a negative one.
We need to consciously think about
our reactions to things that happen to us. When things are tough and not going
the way, you want them to it may be easier to act out with frustration or anger
to try to get things to change the situation. That probably won’t help things.
It may be that your attitude needs to change.
A favorite saying that I constantly
told my children as they were growing up was by Charles Swindoll. “The longer I live, the
more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more
important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the
money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people
think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill.
It will make or break a company…a church…a home. The remarkable thing is we
have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We
cannot change our past…we cannot change the fact that people will act in a
certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play
on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life
is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so, it is with you.
We are in charge of our attitudes”.
I believe it takes practice and a conscious
decision daily to react in way we know is best.
With a positive attitude you can achieve more,
and people will be drawn to you. If you are a negative person or complainer it
will be hard to get others to follow you.
