True role models are those who possess the qualities that we would want to influence us and drive us to be a better then ourselves. They teach us more about ourselves and strive for us to make better choices. A role model is is not someone who is successful but someone who has had similar experiences that we have had. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, set in the 1930’s in the small fictional town called Maycomb, Alabama. Harper Lee demonstrates Atticus Finch as a true role model. Over the course of the novel Atticus stands up for his beliefs, respects everyone despite who they are, and devotes his life for his kids like a true father. Even though the odds go against him, Atticus Finch bravely stands up to his beliefs and morals. Furthermore, he does not let anyone interrupt his beliefs even if it were threatening his own life.
Atticus stands up for what is right, even if he is standing alone. No lawyer would take the time to take on the Tom Robinson case. In addition, Tom Robinson is a black man who was accused of raping 19 year old Mayella Ewell. Atticus Finch bravely and courageously took on the case even though he got the idea that it would take a miracle to win. By taking on the Tom Robinson case, it proved that Atticus was not a follower of society, which separated himself from the rest of the town.
During the trial, Atticus says, “Our courts have their faults, as does any human institution, but in this country our courts are the great levelers, and in our courts all men are created equal.” (Lee 274). Atticus is referring to his beliefs and how they are legitimate.
He stands up for righteousness and justice rather than the majority. Additionally, Atticus believes that violence is not the appropriate answer. Tom Robinson is a human being just like the white people even though he is of different color that doesn’t change that there should be equality in the court of law.In the town of Maycomb, Atticus believes that everyone is entitled to equal rights and freedoms. Which is why he treats everyone equal no matter family history, race, color, personality, rich or poor, he wants Maycomb to see that everyone is the same and for the people to treat everyone equally.”Which, gentlemen, we know in itself a lie as black as Tom Robinson’s skin, a lie I do not have to paint out to you. You know the truth, and the truth is this: Some negroes lie, some negroes are immoral, some negroes are not to be trusted around women- black or white. But this truth applies to the human race and to no particular race of men.
There is no person in this courtroom who has not lied, who has never done any immoral thing, and there is no man living who has never looked upon a women without desire”(Lee 273)As a amazing father Atticus teaches and encourages both his children to accept people for who they are and not to give up when things get hard in the early chapters of the book Scout starts school and the second day she decides not to go to school anymore because of what has happened between her and Miss Caroline along with her peers. Atticus assures Scout that everything will be fine and that she has to go to school because it’s the law, he goes along to explain “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view-” until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (Lee 30) meaning one can never really understand an individual until one begins looking at the situation at hand from the view of that individual. It is not until one climbs into an individual’s skin and walks around in it that one will understand that individual.” In this quote, Finch appears to be giving an important piece of advice to Scout when she experiences a very tough time while in school. The quote is meant to help Scout go back to school even though she had made up her mind never to go back to school.
This proves that Atticus stands up for his beliefs and he does not back down even if it is just Atticus standing alone. Furthermore, he speaks from his heart and mind and he gives good advice to his children. Harper Lee’s writing skills bring out the worst and best qualities of her characters. This makes the character, Atticus Finch himself, able to tell what’s right and wrong to his children. Following this more, these are the qualities that true role models need, to even be named a role model. Generally speaking, role models and superheroes are not people who are successful or famous. They are people who set positive examples and they provide you with remarkable advice that you would use as you grow older.
Atticus Finch is the definition of a role model.
