What pride and self-deception lead him to

What is the American Dream? The American Dream is the equal opportunity for anyone in this country to obtain a better, richer, fuller life through hard work and determination regardless of where the person starts from. Arthur Miller’s play, Death of a Salesman, centers around the idea of dreaming and the American Dream. I believe that Arthur Miller seems to use the pursuit of the American Dream to say that a man needs to have purpose in life. Without a purpose, man is lost in life. The Lowman men are pursuing a version of the dream that are not in align with who they are causing them to feel unhappy and lost.
Throughout the play, we see that Willy has misguided values about success and unrealistic version of the American Dream. Also, this coupled with his pride and self-deception lead him to pursue the wrong path in life. He seems to believe that all a man needs to be successful and prosperous is charisma. “Because the man who makes an appearance in the business world, the man who creates personal interest, is the man who gets ahead.” (pg. 33).
